Green (Lantern’s) Light

Internet hosting is also a commitment to the planet. Here's how we conduct our green policy.

The Green Challenge

The Internet industry consumes an enormous amount of energy. The greater part of this consumption comes from servers and the data-centers that host them: servers consume energy to stay up and running 24/7 and data-centers to prevent these servers from overheating.

As a hosting provider, we host our servers across several data-centers to provide our users with their hosting plans. It is our responsibility to manage our impact on the environment and to reduce our consumption.

The best structure to deal with such green awareness is austerity > efficiency > low-carbon policy > offset. There’s much we can do within our own policies to ensure our carbon footprint is as low as possible.

Stuck to Green Hosting

Websites have a carbon footprint

Despite their digitized nature, websites have a real impact on our real world. In order to serve their contents, transfer their data to your devices, and display their pages on your screens, they need energy. As a hosting provider, we are able to impact the energy used to serve and (in part) transfer your contents.

What is Green Energy?

Green websites and web services require green energy. We use this energy to power our servers, and the data-centers that host our hardware. Green energy means energy with a low to zero carbon emission footprint. At alwaysdata we own our hardware but not the data-centers. This means that to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, we have to work with the greenest suppliers available.

Why go green?

Our impact on our world isn’t negligible. We can’t address the energy that websites and web services consume by themselves, but we can decrease the carbon footprint of their hosting. We want to be an actor for the efficient reduction of carbon emissions by choosing certified hardware for both our servers and our network equipment.

Making a difference together

To ensure we control our environment, we monitor all our equipment in real time. This allows us access to accurate information about which components consume more than expected, and how to reduce this consumption. We already take care of the running processes: we shut down every unneeded upstream process.

As a client of our data-centers we can choose our equipment but we can’t select our energy provider. So we have hosted our infrastructure in France. Even without the ability to choose our provider we can ensure the energy that powers our data-centers and our servers comes from hydroelectric and nuclear plants, some of the most carbon-free energy sources available.

Being green also means being ethical in our business practices. We don’t host huge consuming tasks, like data computation on CPUs, Blockchain mining, or cluster rendering. We have no intention of using our hardware for these purposes as allowing those processes on our infrastructure would be irresponsible. We care about what we host.

How do we do it?

We commit ourselves to being as green as possible. Here are the choices we’ve made:

Actions

  • We choose the hardware we run, confident of its green design.
  • We select our equipment to ensure a low-level energy policy.
  • We monitor the processes that run on our hosting platform and measure their consumption.
  • We shut down unneeded processes when they’re no longer in use.
  • We don’t run processes that conflict with our energy policy.

Partnerships

  • We select our equipment providers and manufacturers in order to utilise safe, clean, responsible hardware.
  • We host our infrastructure in select data-centers, recognized for their green labels.
  • We have chosen to stay in a country where energy is produced in a responsible, carbon-free manner.

Remote workers

Having a green policy also means reducing the carbon footprint of the whole company. We made the choice not to have an office that has its own energy consumption, but to work remotely. This allows us to reduce the carbon emissions that would otherwise result from keeping an office running and the daily commute of our staff members.

Moves

As mentioned, as a full-remote company we do not engage in the daily home-work commute. Interventions on-site in data-centers are scheduled by our engineering team to ensure they can access the building by public transportation, in reduced traffic hours.

We have a strong program of Tech Evangelism, which does involve a lot of travel. Conferences are selected to prevent long-distance flights and where possible our staff travel by train.

Funds

We are currently working on the final part of the pattern: offset. We are aware we can always do more to reduce our carbon footprint and are therefore looking for further solutions to support great initiatives involved in carbon emissions reduction. Look for more information about this soon!
